Catherine Cleary from the Irish Times attended the Burren Slow Food Festival here in Lisdoonvarna last month and had a lot to write about. In her article in the Irish Times (9 June 2012), she is raving about the Wild Honey Inn and Aidan McGrath’s food (the menu features of course our Burren Smoked Salmon).
It sounds as if that dinner went down a treat after the seaweed foraging walk in Spanish Point earlier that day. Ger Talty from Wild Irish Sea Veg (Spanish Point Sea Veg) showed us which kinds seaweeds are growing there and what they can be used for. All the different seaweeds have their own benefits for us, and there is a lot to learn! We had a great tasting of different foods prepared with seaweeds afterwards.
On this walk, we were with Catherine Cleary and a group of interested members of the public including celebrity chef Donal Skehan and his girlfriend Sofie Larsson, as well as Stefan Bergleiter and his wife Janice from Naturland, one of the biggest organic certification associations in Germany.
In her article, Catherine is also urging the readers to look out for the Responsible Irish Fish Label. In one of the many interesting talks, Frank Fleming from Schull explained about the madness of exporting 80% of Irish caught and bred fish and importing the same quantity of much travelled fish which often is of lesser quality.
